Prom & Prejudice w/ Guest Blogger Ms. Ashley

So who here is a Pride & Prejudice fan? The moment I saw the title “Prom & Prejudice” I knew, this was going to be great.

Synopsis:

After winter break, the girls at the very prestigious Longbourn Academy become obsessed with the prom. Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn’t interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be — especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London.

Lizzie is happy about her friend’s burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles’s friend, Will Darcy, who’s snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn’t seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it’s because her family doesn’t have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk — so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?

Will Lizzie’s pride and Will’s prejudice keep them apart? Or are they a prom couple in the making? Whatever the result, Elizabeth Eulberg, author of The Lonely Hearts Club, has concocted a very funny, completely stylish delight for any season — prom or otherwise.

Review:

So, we’re all familiar with the line “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” from the original Pride and Prejudice. The opening line of this novel follows in the same vein, “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl of high standing at Longbourn Academy must be in want of a prom date.”, and it sets the stage beautifully. Right off the bat, you can tell it’s not your cut and dry Pride and Prejudice remake. All of the classic characters have been given new life. I took great delight in the irony of Elizabeth Bennet, who in Jane Austen’s work rarely practiced the piano, was a scholarship student at Longbourn Academy with a great talent on the piano. Every time they mentioned her practicing like crazy I had a mental giggle. Mr. Colins is still as cut and dry as ever and with a “soft spot” for Lizzie (take note that instead of searching for a wife, he was searching for a Prom Date. Prom is serious stuff at Longbourn Academy). There’s a whole bunch of other characters that appear as well, I’d tell you more about their roles, but I don’t want to give away the story. If you’re a huge Kitty and Mary fan, then you’ll be a bit disappointed – They show up in the book, but it’s almost like an afterthought. Overall, it was a very enjoyable read. You knew the basic plot if you’ve read Pride & Prejudice, but the way it comes together isn’t that predictable! So go forth and READ IT!

Dust City

Wow!!!  So for those of you that dont know, I have been in a fairy tale re-tell type of mind set for like the last 6 months and have read a lot of fairy tale type books (sleepless by cyn balog, the grimm legacy, fairest of all (the true story of the wicked queen),etc.).  Well this book just fits right in!  Dust City: "When you're dad is the wolf that killed little red riding hood, life is no fairytale" is what it says on the back cover.  This book was good!  It was a little slow to start, but once it starts going, I really enjoyed it!!!  Here's the synopsis:

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?

His son, that's who.

Ever since his father's arrest for the murder of Little Red Riding Hood, teen wolf Henry Whelp has kept a low profile in a Home for Wayward Wolves . . . until a murder at the Home leads Henry to believe his father may have been framed.

Now, with the help of his kleptomaniac roommate, Jack, and a daring she-wolf named Fiona, Henry will have to venture deep into the heart of Dust City; a rundown, gritty metropolis where fairydust is craved by everyone and controlled by a dangerous mob of Water Nixies and their crime boss leader, Skinner.

Can Henry solve the mystery of his family's sinister past? Or, like his father before him, is he destined for life as a big bad wolf?

For those of you interested in other books that deal with fairy tale related themes, check these out!
